Cartography, a basic tool for geographic research, has evolved over time as an increasingly precise and complex technique to represent the territory. The changes made by man to represent the world have been linked to historical and cultural factors, including advances in technique.
Cartography is not only understood as a representation of a particular context in strictly geographical terms but also as a useful graphic interpretation strategy in countless fields such as land planning, research and, of course, pedagogy. Therefore, the article focuses on the relevance of cartography in the academic field, understood as an instrument that creates a close relationship between geography nd history, cultural traditions, artistic techniques and even with philosophy when conceiving it as an attempt to understand reality. In addition, its role in the field of semiotics is considered as it shows its value as a means of communication, concentrating on the value of the map not only as a data record but as a set of messages, designed by the cartographer for different purposes and particular interpretations, made by the receiver. In this case, cartographer and academic recipient become interlocutors who use an image as a communication channel.
