RELACIÓN DE LA SALUD ORAL CON LAS ENFERMEDADES CRÓNICAS EN LAS PERSONAS MAYORES: UNA REVISIÓN

Resumen
La relación que existe entre la cavidad oral y la salud general es evidente; ciertas patologías crónicas tienen mayor impacto sobre la condición bucodental y algunas enfermedades orales generan mayor daño a nivel sistémico. De esta manera, la diabetes, la osteoporosis, el cáncer y la medicación para el manejo de las alteraciones cardiovasculares y neuropsiquiátricas, entre otras, afectan la condición oral. Por su parte, la periodontitis, el edentulismo, el dolor oral y el cáncer oral afectan la salud general. Estas asociaciones plantean la necesidad de una mayor investigación y la responsabilidad que tienen todos los profesionales de la salud de implementar acciones orientadas a promover la salud y prevenir la enfermedad con una visión integral de la persona.
