Abstract

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjuvant in the treatment of periodontitis. Materials and methods: In recent years, the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in these patients has been suggested. This treatment is used to accelerate tissue recovery and improve its physiological aspects, providing a greater supply of oxygen to damaged tissue. A review has been carried out following PRISMA regulations. The international databases of PubMed via MEDLINE, WOS, Academic Search Complete, Cinahl, SPORTDiscus, IBECS, Lilacs, PsycINFO, SCIELO and CENTRAL have been used. Cochrane was used to stipulate risk of bias and the quality of evidence was analyzed using GRADE. Results: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in periodontitis. The number of participants in this review was 149 individuals from a total of 5 studies. The number of total sessions ranged between 5 and 20 and the duration of therapy application was one hour per session. Conclusion: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in periodontitis. This therapy reduces gingival index, sulcus bleeding, probing depth, attachment loss, and gingival crevicular fluid volume.
