THE IMPACT OF ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION ON A SCHOLAR POPULATION FROM THE INFANTILE VILLAGE SOS, IN FLORIDABLANCA, SANTANDER BY DETERMINING THE ORAL HYGIENE AND GINGIVAL INDEX

Purpose: Determining the impact generated through a sensibilization and motivational program about oral hygiene habits in a scholar group, age range from six to fifteen years old.
Material and methods: A grouping random selection was performed. An intervention group (n=40) and a control group were assigned (n=45). For the oral health sensibilization two programs were executed for 4 months. The dependent (The simplified oral hygiene index IHOS and the gingival index IG), the independent (intervention, brushing, flossing, age and gender) and the confusion (mother’s educational level, provenience and diet) variables were considered.
Results: The participants’ average age was 11.2 ± 2.3 years and the brushing frequency was 2.9 ± 0.4 a day; at the start of the study. When analyzing the sociodemographic variables and the intervention type, a statistically significant association was observed in the mother’s educational level, 27.6% (8) from the intervened group and 72.4% (21) from the control group have primary degree (p=0.01). When evaluating the oral hygiene a statistically significant and third record, p=0.004 and p<0.001, respectively. When evaluating the gingival index, a statistically significant association was evident in the three records p=0.010 and p<0.0001, respectively. The quantitative analysis showed statistically significant differences in the oral hygiene and gingival index.
Conclusions: The impact generated through the program was positive and it mirrors on the oral hygiene and the periodontal condition.
