Purpose: To evaluate the method of estimation of the chronological age around the 18 years based on the degree of maturation of third molars, in orthodontic patients between 16 and 21 years old.Material and Methods: A observational descriptive of prevalence study was done. The determination of the age was made using the Demirjian method in 1000 panoramic radiographs. This method makes a description of the state of maturation of third molar by degrees (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H). For each developmental stage, the probability of an individual being at least 18 years old (legal adulthood) was evaluated. The plan of analysis was to calculate mean, standard deviation, range, frequency and an analysis stratified, according to sex, absence of the first molar permanent and position of third molar.
Results: For both genders, it was reached stage G at 18 years old. It was a mayor proportion of vertical position when the third molars were in stages G and H at 18 years old.
Conclusion: It is possible to use this method as estimator of the age and also stands out that females achieved developmental stages on average much earlier than males.
