Abstract

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome (TMD) is a pathologic entity with wide clinical presentation variability, their orthodox treatment range from basic standards of bio ergonomic and change of lifestyle habits to invasive interventions. The possibility of handling with acupuncture has been raised from thousands of years ago. The objective of this paper was to consolidate scientific information on the use of acupuncture in the management of TMD; it was carried out using the classical academic literature in the area and consulting the database engine from the National University of Colombia, grouped in health sciences and related to the subject as social sciences, humanities and multidisciplinary. The terms used were “acupuncture” “temporomandibular dysfunction” “craniomandibular disorders” and “bruxism” and their corresponding in Spanish, no limit in dates; besides priority was given to the latest research and meta-analysis. The current scientific literature reported several studies that analyzes the effectiveness of TMD treatment with acupuncture and raise explanations on the mechanism of action especially in pain. In general, studies accept the effectiveness of acupuncture in the management of TMD more than placebo, and persistence of its positive impact in the long term. The studies are not conclusive and many questions remain unresolved; therefore, it’s important to standardize clinical practice and to further research with scientific support.
