Objective: To determine the mercury levels in blood in patients with and without amalgam fillings.
Material and methods: Two groups were studied. Twenty-two people with amalgam fillings and twenty people without any fillings or with composites fillings. After designing the instrument, blood tests were taken, which were analyzed by using a technique called spectrum photometry.
Results: No meaningful differences were found on the mercury concentrations when they were analyzed by occupation, time related to the dentistry and amalgam manipulation (P>0.165). It was found a relation between amalgams fillings, years with amalgam fillings, the number of amalgam-filled tooth surfaces and number of teeth with amalgam fillings; the results showed significantly differences so that (P<0.0007), (P<0,0025), (P<0,0011), (P<0,0010), respectively.
Conclusions: A direct and proportional relationship was established in the exposure time and the mercury concentration that was found. It was concluded that the longest is the exposure time, the biggest is the mercury concentration.
